This truck was built for a forthcoming (2025) ad campaign for Firestone Tire. In addition, it was an expedition-leading rig for Firestone’s media events in 2024, which earned it a mention in this story from Expedition Portal and this video from Talon Sei, among others.
The concept for this rig was to be the ultimate vehicle for overlanding, sparing no expense. With a 7.3-liter naturally aspirated gasoline-burning “Godzilla” V8 with 430 horsepower and 485 foot-pounds of torque on tap, a locking rear differential, solid front differential, and more than 14,000 pounds of towing capacity, there’s no doubt this ‘23 F-250 SuperCab XLT FX4 was a stout starter platform. It was transformed by the team at MULE Expedition Outfitters in Tualatin, Oregon into a long-distance expedition rig with equipment to rival any build on this continent (and maybe even Australia).
Even without all the other equipment, which we’ll detail later, the MITS Alloy aluminum flatbed “tray” and canopy alone transforms this truck into a bucket-list build. The MITS features an 8-gallon headboard water tank, full-length rear trundle drawer, and four storage compartments in front and behind the rear wheels. The right front box houses the ARB twin-scroll air compressor that has air chucks plumbed to both sides of the tray, making airing up even easier. Inside the MITS canopy are two shelves, a massive drawer, and slideout aluminum table. Additional extras include a ClearView Easy Slide for quick access to the 75-qt Dometic fridge. The fridge is powered by a 200-Ah lithium battery from DCS that features its own smartphone app, which makes monitoring battery levels super easy. In addition to power from the engine’s alternator, the DCS is topped up by a 180W solar panel mounted to the Roofnest clamshell rooftop tent mounted atop the canopy. A REDARC Manager 30, well, manages the power to and from the DCS battery and the 2000W inverter allows campers the ability to plug in and power even the most energy-intensive accessories — like a coffee maker or blender.
Not surprisingly, 37-inch Firestone Destination M/T2 tires hold up this gargantuan overlander, which are wrapped around some 17” Method 704-HD wheels. Behind those is a hodgepodge of world-class suspension and steering components, including Deaver rear leaf springs that sit the rear-end one inch above stock height but are rated for a 2,000-pound constant load. So, the back-end rides better than stock, despite the extra weight. The front is lifted 3.5 inches above stock by BDS coil springs. And at all four corners are FOX 2.5 Performance Elite remote reservoir shocks, which are multi-way adjustable. Steering is dampened by Carli’s high and low steering stabilizers with differential guard and adjustable track bar.
Additional, and ample, trail illumination is handled by six Baja Designs lights, including two LP4 lights in the ExpeditionOne front bumper and twin LP4s mounted at the A-pillars, which are controlled by a SwitchPros on the dashboard. A set of Baja Designs foglights were plumbed into the factory foglight wiring and switch. The imposing front bull bar bumper holds up a Midland Radio Highland Tall bull-bar antenna, which increases the power and range for the 50-Watt MXT-575 GMRS radio mounted beneath the front jump seat.
Although this truck has only turned just over a scant 6,800 miles, it’s had plenty of adventures. It’s ready for hundreds of thousands of miles of world-class expedition with its next owner.
